Pe'ahi is the wave's Hawaiian name; the world just calls it Jaws, a nickname it earned honestly. It sits on Maui's north shore, mostly flat and forgettable until a big enough winter swell turns it into one of the most powerful waves on earth. It's too fast and too heavy to paddle into most days, which is why tow-in surfing was pioneered here in the 1990s: a jet ski whips the rider into the wave at speed, since paddling alone isn't enough. It now hosts a stop on the world's Big Wave Tour, watched from the cliffs above by whoever's brave enough to show up that day. Paddling out solo still isn't an option here - the tow ropes that started it all never really went away.
