Uluwatu doesn't start at the water - it starts with a descent through limestone cliffs and a cave carved into the rock, temple bells drifting down from Pura Luhur perched high above. By the time you paddle out, the wave has already earned its reputation twice over: once for the reef breaking below a sacred site, once for the wave itself.
This is the break that put Bali on the surf map in the first place - a long left peeling across multiple named sections, from the fast inside barrels at Racetracks to the open, playful walls further out, working almost any swell the Indian Ocean sends its way. On the shirt, that's the wave and the lineup cropped into the shape of Bali itself, with the temple marking the cliff it breaks beneath. Fifty years on, the walk back up still means the same worn cave steps past the resident macaques guarding Pura Luhur - proof that some things about Uluwatu were never going to get sanitized for tourists.
